Description

« Sensorly Map Viewer » is the first smartphone application to display continuously-updated maps and to forecast WiFi and cell phone signal quality.

GSM maps display the type and quality of a GSM network using a combination of colors of varying intensities : blue for 2G (GPRS), green for 2.5G (EDGE), yellow for 3G (UMTS) and red for 3.5G (HSPA); very dark for 1 bar, very bright for 5 bars. With this map, customers can determine if changing carrier will improve their cellphone user experience, find out if a coveted vacation spot offers adequate 3G or 3.5G signal quality for tethering, see where their carrier has deployed 3.5G, check if their phone’s 3G reception is as good as average, and more…

WiFi maps display the signal quality of a WiFi network: blue for 1 WiFi bar, green for 2 WiFi bars, yellow for 3 WiFi bars and red for 4 WiFi bars. With this map, customers finally know if a hotspot is worth going to : unlike ‘pushpin maps’ typically used to represent hotspots’ locations, Sensorly’s maps show how strong the signal is everywhere around the hotspot thus ending the frequent frustration of not being able to connect because the signal is too weak; a most important factor in ad-hoc, outdoor or community WiFi networks.

Using the Map Viewer application, customers will be able to view any map up to city-level zoom as well as demonstrate full-zoom capability in pre-determined areas of each map, both for free. Permanently unlocking full-zoom capability requires purchasing a map add-on. All map add-ons are available free of charge during the launch period.

The launch maps include the 2Wire and FON WiFi networks in addition to select GSM carriers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India. Sensorly has already collected millions of data points throughout the world during its beta stage and is poised to roll out new maps regularly, until world-wide coverage is achieved.
Sensorly will provide similar maps for CDMA networks in the near future and plans to support community WiFi efforts by providing web maps of their networks, for free.

Sensorly Map Viewer is available today on the Android Market and will be available for iPhone in the first quarter of 2010. A Windows Mobile version will follow.
